Who We Are
Mosopisyek of Benet indigenous community
The Mosopisyek of the Benet Indigenous community (also called Ndorobo) have inhabited the
moorlands and forests of Mount Elgon since time immemorial, spanning back 500 years.
Archaeological research in the Mount Elgon caves in Kenya suggests that our origins on the
mountain may date back thousands of years. As of 2022, we numbered 8,500 individuals across
1,612 households, awaiting the results of the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) census after the
Mosopisyek were assigned a tribal code of 582 during the 2024 census. In 1990, the Mosopisyek
were forcefully evicted without prior and informed consent, and our ancestral land was designated as
a National Park in 1993. We used to live in four clusters or sub-communities, each with its own subterritory on the mountain. The boundaries are defined by rivers, while streams delineate the
territories among clans. The clusters include Chebukut, Kupiswa, Kaborom, and Tengwoopkiir. We
hold our springs and streams in the high moorlands in deep respect.
The forceful eviction forced Mosopisyek to be scattered in Bukwo, Kween, and Kapchorwa, while
others crossed to Kenya. The Mosopisyek were disconnected from their ancestral lands, cultural
rights, and the land meant for their settlement, which the majority community took.
